Cabin Fever Trail Ride
The skiing may still be fun, but at this time of year, “Cabin Fever” hits. One can’t help but crave green scenery. And with that in mind, we loaded up some hairy horses and spent the day down in Slate Creek trail riding. Another small wonder to living in McCall, just a short hour’s drive away is the Salmon River Canyon, with its own micro-climate. We started out with gloves and coats, which soon gave way to the wish for sun screen. And the lunch stop ended with horses needing some sweaty itchy spots rubbed, resulting in horse hair in our coffee. Ah, living in McCall!

Anderson Lake on Horseback

On the trail to Anderson Lake

Testing the waters at Anderson Lake
With every cast Kifor and Stefon Muroff hooked a native Brook Trout. The lake receives little use, so the fish are eager to bite. Kifor said “They will bite on anything bright colored, like a Gold Blue Fox Spinner. I’d even try a worm and small hook and drag it along the bottom.” The other guests along for the ride are Blackhawk Ranch homeowners. Fishing should only get better with fall coming!
Equestrian Manager Jil Wickander is eager to ride into more of the area’s hard to reach lakes, so give her a call at (208) 630-4348 to book your own high mountain lake adventure!

Summer Riding Lessons

Sara on Scoobie Doo
Blackhawk Equestrian Center Director Jil Wickander will be sharing her extensive knowledge of horses with the next generation throughout the summer months.
This last week, Jil spent an afternoon with Sara who learned about grooming a horse, how to identify different types of saddle pads and how to saddle a horse. Scoobie Doo, a favorite of the Blackhawk horses, provided Sara with the opportunity to practice bridling, starting and stopping a horse, and how to neck rein.
By the end of the afternoon, Sara was a cowgirl in the making! If you would like more information on riding lessons with Jil, please contact her at (208) 630-4348.

Haunted House Recap + Story of Mrs. Abbott
Halloween at Blackhawk on the River was a terrifying sight at the first annual Blackhawk Haunted House. Guests braved the haunted cellar filled with creepy-crawlers, spider webs and eerie music. Those brave enough sampled brains and eyeballs of naughty children (otherwise known as spaghetti noodles and boiled pearl onions) all under the watchful eye of the infamous Blackhawk witch! After surviving the haunted cellar, kids of all ages bobbed for apples, carved pumpkins and decorated cupcakes before fueling up for trick-or-treating at the potluck dinner.
One guest in particular truly got into the “spirit” of Halloween. Mrs. Abbott, a former resident at the Blackhawk Ranch House oversaw the entire event from afar. According to the stories passed down from generation to generation, Mrs. Abbott was accidentally killed when she was run over by a run-away horse and buggy in the driveway of the Ranch House. From that time, all those who have lived at the Ranch House claim to have seen Mrs. Abbott from time-to-time as she watches over those who reside in her home.

Elk Call Blackhawk’s Equestrian Center Home
This summer, Blackhawk on the River welcomed a group of cow elk to the community as they took up residence below the Equestrian Center to calve. Elk typically begin their migration from lower elevation wintering grounds to their summer habitat in the mountains between May and June. While bull elk migrate much earlier, cow elk take advantage of the spring and summer foliage in the lower elevations as they prepare to give birth. The Blackhawk Wildlife Preserve provides an ideal location for elk calving grounds as these animals typically seek out brush-covered areas with nearby timber to use as cover. Today, most of the elk have left the Blackhawk Wildlife Preserve for their summer homes high in the mountains, but look for them again as they come down to the meadows this winter.

Announcing McCall's Only Equestrian Center at Blackhawk
McCall, Idaho–Valley County’s only equestrian center is now open at the Blackhawk community in McCall. The 40-acre, Blackhawk Equestrian Center currently operates from two recently renovated onsite barns with 13 horses, including two fillies born on May 17th. Construction is complete on a new 150-by-200-foot outdoor riding arena and 50 foot round pen.
Blackhawk will host an equine event-filled weekend for the public on July 8th and 9th to introduce the center to the McCall community and celebrate recent additions. Activities include a free catered barbeque, along with free trail rides and youth riding lessons that can be scheduled by calling (208) 634-6774.
“McCall has always been a spectacular area for horseback riding, but an equestrian center has been a much-needed missing component,” says Rick Luna, CFO of Blackhawk Partners LLC. “All of us at Blackhawk are extremely pleased to see the Equestrian Center come to life. Horse lovers who live in the area should find it a real asset.”
The Blackhawk Equestrian Center is located at the south end of the 1551-acre residential community. Construction on the center’s permanent buildings and other facilities will begin within two years. At completion, the center will consist of an indoor and outdoor arena, including multiple areas to honor western, dressage, reigning and English riding, along with alternative aspects of riding. In addition, there will be a round pen and boarding facilities for Blackhawk residents.
The new arena and round pen will be available to Blackhawk residents, potential buyers, and guests.
Miles of riverside and forested trails exclusively designated for horseback riding will also traverse the Blackhawk property, connecting to hundreds of miles of Forest Service trails just across West Mountain Road. A corresponding trail system on the Blackhawk property will be reserved for hiking and mountain biking.
